We are thrilled to announce the two proposals selected for the latest reporting grants from our Fund, through our special call made possible by the Fundación Avina and their InnContext Agency!
The opportunity to apply for a reporting grant was availalbe to all journalists who are signed up to our Latin American Solutions Journalism Fund, an initiative of El Colectivo 506.
The reporters whose proposals were selected for funding were:
Brigide Scarlett Timana Zapata, Perú. She will report on a rural network of community defenders who support victims of violence.
Gabriela Carolina Montenegro López, El Salvador. She will report on a local effort to train women interested in improving their autonomy through agriculture.
Their stories will be published in media in their countries and republished by El Colectivo 506 during the month of May as part of our Gender Equity edition, which unites a total of 16 journalists who have received reporting grants from us to make the edition possible. Twelve of the journalists’ grants were made possible by the support of the Solutions Journalism Network; two were made possible by previous donors’ support of our Latin American Solutions Journalism; and two were made possible by Fundación Avina and InnContext.
The jury that selected the proposals was made up of the co-founders of El Colectivo 506, Katherine Stanley Obando and Mónica Quesada Cordero, and journalist Florencia Tuchin of InnContext. In a first round of selection, which does not include any information about the identity of the applicant, evaluation criteria were based on how well the proposals included sufficient information about an existing response to the problem of gender inequity by presenting information from that response as established by the four pillars of Solutions Journalism. In the second round, jurors assessed each applicant’s capacity based on prior work samples.
