We’re thrilled to announce a new milestone in our work to train, support, and fund journalists in our region. This work will grow in 2025 with our first cohort of Journalism Fellows focused on a single topic! Applications for our next round of grants for journalists in Latin America will open on January 10th, 2025—and this time, selected journalists will tell the stories of how their countries are responding to the massive challenge of gender inequality. (Interested journalists should sign up for email updates here and/or join our WhatsApp chat here).
This past year, our team at El Colectivo 506 launched the Latin American Solutions Journalism Fund to help us provide fellowships for constructive journalism in other countries of the region. Our results included the training and certification of six new solutions journalism trainers in the region, and reporting grants for six journalists who documented solutions to problems in their countries in November.
As a result of this work, the U.S.-based Solutions Journalism Network has chosen our team at El Colectivo 506 to administer 12 fellowships for journalists who want to report on responses to gender inequality in Latin America. Applications will be received from Jan. 10-24; selected journalists will be announced in mid-February; and the Fellows will create their pieces from February-April for publication in May. Fellows will receive an award of $500 to support their work.
As with all fellowships offered by our Fund, this opportunity is open only to journalists who have received prior training in solutions journalism and have signed up for the Fund. For journalists who are new to us and would like to apply, we will be offering three free, virtual “Introduction to Solutions Journalism” trainings throughout January that journalists can take in order to qualify to join the Fund.
In addition, we’ll be offering a wide range of webinars from experts in gender equity to help interested journalists gain information they can use to craft their application. Pre-registration will be required for all trainings and webinars—links below! (Again, to receive all of this information and updates on the Fund via email or WhatsApp, sign up for email updates here and/or join our WhatsApp chat here).

More information for journalists: visit the Spanish-language version of this article HERE for a full list of all the free virtual trainings and webinars we will offer throughout, and to sign up! All of the trainings and webinars will be conducted in Spanish and require pre-registration (all registration links are listed in the Spanish-language version of this article).
The January trainings will include virtual Introduction to Solutions Journalism, offered on three different dates and times (select the one that best fits your needs), necessary to join the Latin American Solutions Journalism Fund and apply for this and any of our Fellowships. In addition, we are partnering with global leaders in research on gender equity to offer a series of webinars on this topic throughout mid-January. These webinars are open to all and will help interested journalists gain information and insight to craft a successful application. We are proud to be offering webinars featuring:
- Melissa Wong Oviedo, Senior Program Officer with Equimundo. The Center for Masculinities and Social Justice works to promote gender equality and create a world free from violence by engaging men and boys in partnership with women, girls, and individuals of all gender identities. Their work emerges from more than two decades of local and international research, which informs their program development and advocacy.
- Cecilia Garcia, LAC Regional Lead at EqualMeasures 2030, who will dive into the 2024 SDG Gender Index, a multidimensional index, benchmarking gender equality across 139 countries covering 96% of the world’s women and girls.
- Cesar Diago, a researcher on the World Bank project “Women, Business and the Law,” will present the results of the project, which in 2024 published the 10th edition of a series of studies on economic opportunities for women in more than 190 economies.
- Estelle Loiseau, Gender Programme Officer at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, who will discuss the Social Institutions and Gender Index. The SIGI is a composite index built on 4 dimensions and 16 indicators, covering the major dimensions of the lives of women and girls throughout their existence.
